Book Blogger Hop

The Book Blogger Hop, hosted by Jennifer of Crazy-for-Books, is back up for the last weekend of August.

The Hop, for those who don't know, is a way for book bloggers to connect with each other during the weekends. Every week Jennifer asks book bloggers a question to facilitate the community's discussion.

This week's question: Do you use a rating system for your reviews and if so, what is it and why?

A - I don't use a rating system. I've been blogging for just over a month and I have considered using one... especially after visiting some truly awesome book blogs that do.

However, I began blogging with the intention of not hierarchically arranging books but to critically examine the positive and negative elements of what I read. I do not particularly want to say that one book is better than another, but to engage in an argument and question its premises. Recently I've taken to reviewing a book and then posing a question. I believe that reading should be an active experience, and thus my reviews often lead to discussion questions.

Happy book blogging and I hope you all enjoy the last few days of August. I can't believe its almost September! This month has flown by... and I personally can't wait for the next one to start :)

  1. Hello Ms. C. Thanks for visiting my blog.

I like the combination of books, musings, and baking on your blog. I sometimes do a food "thing" on my blog, and it's been too long. You inspired me to post something this weekend for the Weekend Cooking meme!

  4. I agree that it's more interesting to engage with a book instead of just giving it a rating. I think ratings can be useful if you're just scanning a review but if you want a discussion to pop up, simple ratings aren't enough.

  6. Stopping by via the hop! I dont use ratings either, I feel that people tend to go straight to that instead of reading your true thoughts and opinions. Feel free to check my site out: hollyb-08.blogspot.com

  8. Happy Friday!! I totally agree with you when you say reading should be an active experience. I struggle sometimes with rating what I read because I'm an emotional reviewer. As well as reviewing what I liked/disliked about the book, I share how the book made me feel. Hmmm maybe that's how I should rate it. Thanks for your comments. It's got me thinking :D

  10. Stopped on the hop and I am following you (sound stalkery no?). Hope you enjoy the hop - I have met some great online pals. I don't use a system - but I often use a rating to assist me in saying sometime about the book. Because we all know what 3 of 5 stars means. I featured a blog a couple of weeks ago that used a 100 point system which I thought gave her greater depth in rating. Hope you will come by. I don't do technical reviews. I am a plot driven reader coming to appreciate characters more over time. I have a fun contest on Fangs, Wands and Fairy Dust

  13. Hey, thankyou so much for stopping by and following my blog, I really appreciate it.
I know exactly what you mean about having no rating system, I feel that way too.

I'm a new follower of your blog too now so I look forward to reading your future posts. (The followers widget is playing up so I'm not sure if it will work but if not, I'll try another time.)

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  17. Happy weekend. Come see what my rating system is. Although I do rate my books I only post their rating at the end of the month. That keeps the rating separate from my review as I know my reaction to a book is highly subjective.
